Traditional career paths weren’t designed for neurodivergent women

Incredible female talent is disadvantaged by their differences.

For the most part, without even knowing it.

A shocking 80% of neurodivergent women are not diagnosed before the age of 18.

A late diagnosis brings up complex layers of emotions and identities need to be redefined, all the while, trying to maintain a successful career.

An atypical woman in a typical workplace is made to feel like a square peg always trying to fit into a round hole.

People either under-estimated her or, worse, seemed intimidated by her. She gets used to overwhelming feelings of being weird, awkward, lonely and isolated, anxious, frustrated and angry.

She’s always wondering: why don’t I belong, aren’t I worthy?

How do I know all this?

I am a late diagnosed neurodivergent woman who reached the executive level and

unfortunately chose to opt out of the BS rather than face it full on.

"As a newly diagnosed neurodivergent woman I had a lot of negative thinking about how and why I did things. I was masking, lacked boundaries and had no idea how to manage my energy levels and the commitments
that come with having a family and a career.

This program was life changing in the sense that it is a beautiful invitation to be yourself, embrace yourself and learn that you have something wonderful to contribute to this world and, guess what, it didn't feel hard!

To be surrounded by other women on this journey removed the isolation that can come from navigating the workplace and life
with a brain that is wired differently.

Joey is incredibly knowledgeable, kind and inviting. You instantly know that her authentic approach is a safe place for all of us to come and share our experience and gently learn to be our best selves.”

How the program runs

Empowered is a unique program for unique women that delivers self-acceptance, self-management and self-advocacy outcomes that lead to sustainable professional success

Connection

As we take in new members, we will have sessions all about connection and setting the tone for our time together: holding a safe and supportive space for each other where being authentic is the expectation.

Sharing lived experiences is one of the most inspiring and impactful parts of this program,

Exploration

As late diagnosis and discovery of neurodivergence can be unsettling, this discussion will support us to explore our identity as a neurodivergent professional in order to deepen an authentic sense of self.

We’ll cover neurodiversity fundamentals to develop a clearer and concise narrative for normalising neurodiversity in our organisations.

Energy

In this discussion with Mental Health GP, Dr Jess Nathan fromKintsugi Holistic Health we will explore the cycle of energy and the strategies we can use to improve our baseline and potential.

Targeted tools will enable us to understand and define our own energy cycles so that we can identify and implement strategies that optimise energy, positive emotions and engagement with work.

Wellness Retreat

Twin Figs Farm, located two hours south of Sydney’s CBD, will play host to our optional retreat. The program is designed for us to relax, reset and rejuvenate our wellness and life goals for a healthier and happier life.

Supplementary fee applies.

Environment

Due to heightened sensory sensitivities, the physical environment/s in which we work have a significant impact on our wellbeing and leadership capacities. In this discussion we will explore the relationship between our work, workplaces and energy cycles and positive strategies for regulating our nervous system.

Expert Guest - Occupational Therapist

Occupational therapy is increasingly being used to support neurodivergent professionals to minimise sensory overload, improve focus, and support executive functioning. In this discussion we will work with an OT to understand useful workplace adjustments, balancing workloads to prevent burnout and accommodate fluctuating energy levels.

Effectiveness

We may be “executives” but we face executive functioning challenges over and above neurotypical peers. In this discussion, we’ll explore and share strategies for managing time, prioritising tasks, organisation, planning, problem-solving, and decision-making.

Crowd sourced agenda

At certain points in our journey together, we will decide together what our focus for this discussion will be. Options include smaller break out conversations to get to know each other better, a workshop in a particular skill-building area, member-facilitated discussions in their area of expertise or a guest speaker of our choice.

Etiquette

Etiquette in organisations hasn’t disappeared entirely, but it has evolved in response to changes in work environments, technology, and cultural norms. The informality, hybrid workplaces and shifts in power dynamics can pose challenges for leaders. This discussion will be a chance for us to reflect on our personal brands and the standards we set for ourselves and others.

Expert Guest - Speech Pathology

Speech pathology is increasingly playing a transformative role in supporting neurodivergent professionals by focusing on communication strategies that enhance both personal and professional effectiveness. Mimi Naylor of TalkShop will support our discussion into organising thoughts, communication planning, verbal clarity, non-verbal cues and identity-affirming communication.

Embracing authenticity

At certain points, it will feel natural for us to to completely embrace our unique and amazing selves – and especially the differences. This discussion will focus on the role of authenticity in organisations; what does it really mean to “bring our whole selves to work”.

Goal Setting Retreat

Twin Figs Farm will again will play host to our optional retreat. This time, the program is designed to celebrate the journey and set goals for embracing an authentic future.

Don’t worry, there will be plenty of time for us to relax, reset and rejuvenate.

Supplementary fee applies.

I'm joey

Maybe you resonate with my story?

Throughout my career, I got up, dressed up and showed up as the typical workplace expects.

  • I got up when all I could do was sleep

  • I dressed up in the corporate outfits that made me look like a man and made it difficult to breathe

  • I showed up and took the “opportunities” to work longer and harder, give the presentations, take on the big roles

Reaching the executive level in my early 30’s seemed like a great achievement but for 15 years I know I worked harder than the next guy. Not just navigating neurotypical workplaces but navigating my own battle and journey to authentic leadership.

I arrived at my mid 40s feeling confused, anxious, angry and then completely exhausted.

Turned out I had autistic burnout which led to chronic exhaustion, a loss of skills, reduced tolerance to stimulus and a loss of self-belief. My mission is to embrace my authentic self and unique superpowers to continue to succeed professionally, but on my own terms, and help others to do so too.

my autism experience

I think, feel and act differently

I see things in a way that others can’t. I create order out of chaos, whether it is information, plans or pantries. I think logically and incredibly literally. And I Get Things Done.

I’m big picture and detail-oriented at the same time. For the right topic, I can hyperfocus and fixate until the sun goes down. I make up my own words and can be quite entertaining. And I can have childlike enthusiasm that doesn’t always sit well in a business setting.

I can miss social cues at work and appear aloof or aggressive. Or, I try so hard to be liked that I can come off inauthentic. I fight too many fights, seeing inefficiency or injustice everywhere.

I ask lots of questions and can interrupt inappropriately. I fidget, squirm, pick and scratch. And I bump into things, a lot.

I’m not always confident in my own abilities but I love helping others to see and achieve their unique potential.
